The Promotion She Stole — Chapter 3
Maya worked three years for a promotion. Her manager gave it to her rival instead — but the celebration dinner revealed a secret no one expected.
“Daniel,” Maya said, her voice steady enough to cut glass, “before we toast, I’d love to share something with the team.”
She connected her phone to the restaurant’s display screen — the one Daniel had rented to show Priya’s “achievements” slideshow. The scanned memo filled the screen in giant letters.
The silence was absolute. Priya’s face went from flushed to ghost-white in seconds. Daniel opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
“I’ve also forwarded this to HR, the board, and — since we’re being transparent — to a journalist friend who covers corporate governance,” Maya continued. “Oh, and Priya? Your father called me this morning. He had no idea Daniel was using your name to cover his tracks. He was furious.”
What happened next became office legend. Daniel resigned within the week. Priya, humiliated but honest, apologized to Maya privately and transferred departments. And the board, desperate to contain the scandal, offered Maya the senior manager position with a salary higher than the one originally posted.
She accepted. On her first day in the new office, she hung one thing on the wall: a framed printout of that rooftop dinner photo, with a small brass plaque underneath that read “Always keep receipts.”
